Link WhatsApp Business to a Facebook Page
David TouzetUpdated on 24 September 20265 min readThis link is used by your Community Manager Agent, your Web Marketing and Leads Agent and your Paid Search Agent. It adds a WhatsApp button to your Facebook Page and opens up ads that start a conversation. Allow 5 minutes, with your phone to hand for the confirmation code. It does not bring your messages into Meta Business Suite, and we explain why at the end.
- Step 1 · Check the 3 conditions before you start
- Step 2 · From a computer, through the Page settings
- Step 3 · From Meta Business Suite, the route for business accounts
- Step 4 · From your phone, through the WhatsApp Business app
- Step 5 · The 1 number for 1 Page rule, and the error message that comes with it
- Step 6 · What the link really gives you
- Step 7 · What this link does not do
Check the 3 conditions before you start
Most blockages come from these 3 conditions. Settle them before you ask for the code.
You are an administrator of the Page. The editor role is not enough, the linked accounts screen does not open. If not, ask the person who created the Page for the role. With no Page yet, our guide to create a Facebook business Page takes 15 minutes.
Your WhatsApp account is a Business account. The app is free, and its icon carries a small B. A standard account cannot be linked. To switch, follow our guide on WhatsApp Business and connecting it to an external tool, which details the backup to make before you move your number.
Your number is not linked to any other Page. The strictest rule, and the most frequent error message. Details in step 5.
From a computer, through the Page settings
Log in to facebook.com, click your photo at the top right and switch to your Page. Then click the Page's profile photo, then Settings and privacy, then Settings. In the left-hand column, under the permissions section, open Linked accounts, and finally WhatsApp.
The screen asks for your country code and your WhatsApp Business number, the one the app is installed on. Request the code, it arrives within seconds on WhatsApp, not by SMS. Type it in, and the link is made.
If a label does not match. Meta renames its screens several times a year, and yours may show Connected accounts. Type WhatsApp into the settings search.
From Meta Business Suite, the route for business accounts
The one to favour as soon as your Page belongs to a business portfolio, so in any business that advertises or works with a supplier.
Open business.facebook.com with the account that administers the Page. Check at the top left that the portfolio shown is yours, the classic mistake being to link a number to a previous supplier's portfolio. Open the settings, then WhatsApp accounts, then add an account. Enter the country code and the number, receive the code on WhatsApp, type it in.
This is also where you remove a number, a step that comes in handy in step 5. Our Meta Business Suite guide covers it in full.
From your phone, through the WhatsApp Business app
Open WhatsApp Business, then the settings. On Android, go through the more options menu at the top right. Open the business tools, then the section that mentions Facebook and Instagram. Continue, log in to Facebook, choose the Page to link, confirm.
The advantage, the code does not have to travel between computer and phone. The limit, you do not see the Page's other settings, including those of the action button.
The 1 number for 1 Page rule, and the error message that comes with it
A WhatsApp number links to only 1 Facebook Page at a time. No setting gets round this.
If the number is already taken, the message says it belongs to another business. Most often, it is still sitting in a previous supplier's business portfolio. Remove the number from that portfolio, then start again.
Multiple brands. For 2 separate businesses, you need 2 numbers, so 2 lines. Sharing a number between 2 Pages only moves the link. One Page can, however, receive several numbers for advertising, in Ads Manager.
IF the message says the number belongs
to another business:
1. Meta Business Suite, Business portfolio
settings
2. WhatsApp accounts
3. Select the number concerned, then its options
4. Remove from the business portfolio
5. Go back to the Facebook Page and start
the link again
If you no longer have access to the portfolio that holds
the number, Meta support has to release it.
What the link really gives you
A contact button on your Page. Your visitors open a WhatsApp chat without noting down your number or filling anything in. This is the button that the Community Manager Agent watches, and it is through it that the Web Marketing and Leads Agent collects enquiries.
Ads that open a conversation. The biggest gain. A Facebook or Instagram ad sends people straight into a WhatsApp chat instead of a website. No page to load and no form, so fewer drop-offs. This format requires an active ad account, which you create with our guide on the Meta ad account.
⚠ A trade-off. You pay for every conversation opened, including those nobody reads. Set up your welcome message and quick replies before the first campaign. The rules to follow before launching are detailed in our comparison of WhatsApp, Messenger and Telegram.
What this link does not do
Many tutorials promise that your WhatsApp messages will show up in the Meta Business Suite inbox. That is not what this link does.
That synchronisation exists, Meta describes it, and it even imports part of the history. But its help page lists countries where it is not available, and according to our checks the European Union is among them, France included. We could not open that page from our servers, as Meta blocks automated access. Confirm the point on your own screen before relying on it.
Your conversations therefore stay in the WhatsApp Business app, on the business phone. To gather everything in one place, and to let an agent reply without holding that phone, you need a different connection, the one in our guide to connect WhatsApp Business to an external tool. If you are torn between messaging apps, our comparison of WhatsApp, Messenger and Telegram settles it according to your trade.
The next step in the journey is to link Instagram to your Facebook Page, to bring your 3 channels together in one place.
